                                                                                                                   A LASTING MEMORIAL

Dear Fellow Members
I hope that by now you are aware that I have expressed a wish for a carved stone to be installed at the head of the ROC Grove to provide a more permanent memorial on the site at the National Memorial Arboretum.

As things stand at present we have a grove of 26 specimen Hawthorn trees, a brick plinth with a brief history of the ROC and a garden bench. The installation of a carved stone memorial will complement the existing items in the grove in the short term and hopefully outlast the existing plinth. I am certain that if this is not done in the near future it will not be done at all.

The ROC always had a low profile and in keeping with the memories that most of us have of the organisation and the service that was put in it seems to be appropriate to place on the site a more lasting memorial. The aim is to provide a simple carved stone with the ROC crest and a simple inscription dedicated to all who served in the ROC between 1925 and 1995. There is no intention to aim to be bigger and better than other memorials but to provide a fitting memorial for all who served in the ROC.

A carved stone prepared and located is going to cost about £6000 and this is where you come in. Your support would be most welcome and any contributions would be highly valued. If every member of the Association contributed £3.00 we would be close to meeting our target. In Coventry we have started to raise money by having raffles at our monthly skittle evenings. OK the amounts are not large but the fund keeps growing as we make our contribution.
Please play your part and make a small contribution, it can be done through your Group Secretaries or direct to me:-

Jenny Major, 56 Wordsworth Road, Rugby CV22 6HZ.
I thank you in anticipation
   Jenny
